Georg Feuerstein / Swami Vivekananda / Swami Hariharananda

This Book is the oldest known instruction manual on yoga. Its title means "Short Statements About Yoga." It describes a system known variously as Classical Yoga, Patanjali Yoga, Ashtanga (Eight-limbed) Yoga, and Raja Yoga. The translation we present here has been pieced together with some editorial changes from several previous versions. In drawing on a multiplicity of sources, we have taken care not to introduce any inconsistencies in terminology. We have probably relied most heavily on the excellent translation by Samkhya-Yogacharya Swami Hariharananda Aranya which was published by Calcutta University Press. There are many other excellent English translations in print including those by Georg Feuerstein and Swami Vivekananda.

Yoga Ananda Ashram

Patanjali's Yoga-Sutra is the definitive text on the philosophy of classical Yoga. Very little is known about the life of Patanjali and scholars still debate his identity. The date the text was composed is also a controversal issue though it is believed to have been written sometime between 200 BC and 300 AD...

Patanjali's Yoga Sutra by Daniel Turina

Yoga Sutras is the basic text of the philosophical system of yoga. Do not commit a mistake by interpreting "basic" as "simple", for the very opposite is true- Yoga Sutras expresses fundamental thruths, in a manner in which advanced physic expresses fundamental truths about the nature of the physical world. Translation and commentary by Danijel Turina. Publisher: Ouroboros d.o.o, Croatia

BhojaVrtti: translation Kofi Busia

However and wherever he was born, PataƱjali eventually appeared on earth to fulfill his self-appointed destiny. Unsurprisingly, given his lineage, he had no ordinary childhood. He could apparently communicate fully from the moment he was born. Not only that, but both the topics of his conversations and the intellect and vigour with which he discussed them were of the kind more usually associated with sages, rishis and seers. PataƱjali not only acutely and accurately analysed and discussed things of the present, but revealed matters of both the ancient past and the immediate and distant futures with accuracy and incisive penetration. The cut and thrust of his eye, mind and mouth were of such intensity that on one occasion, when the inhabitants of Bhotabhandra chose to disturb him in the middle of his religious austerities and ridiculed him, he reduced them to ashes with nothing more than the fire of his mouth and speech...

To Observe The Yoga Aphorisms of Patanjali. Book 1.; Concentration; 1. Assuredly, the exposition of Yoga, or Concentration, is now to be made. -- The Sanskrit particle atha, which is translated "assuredly," intimates to the disciple that a distinct topic is to be expounded, demands his attention, and also serves as a benediction.

Sanderson Beck

Yoga Sutras Union Threads by Patanjali. English version by Sanderson Beck. The greatest classical text from the yoga school of Indian philosophy is the YOGA SUTRAS by Patanjali, thought to have been written in the second century BC. These "threads" on yoga or union are extremely terse, stating concisely and often precisely essential points. The text may be explained and interpreted by commentaries or a teacher. Yoga practice is considered complementary to the Sankhya philosophy, the goal being the realization of freedom in Spirit from the world of Nature. This psychological method of liberation is called raja or royal yoga or the yoga of the eight steps, which may be listed as follows...
